WOOT!

The first weekend was great-- kudos to all cast and crew for a job well done!!

This week, take a break, but be sure to keep your lines and music fresh in your brain. We will have a brush up rehearsal on Thursday at 6:30. We will not run through the whole show, but will work the musical numbers and a few other odds and ends.

In the meantime, keep telling people to get their tickets soon.

Awesome!

Last night's rehearsal was pretty darn awesome. We most definitely have a show-- now we just need to put the finishing touches on it.

Tonight get to the theater in time to be completely ready for the cast photo at 7:00. We will immediately after start the dress rehearsal and run the show as we would in an actual performance. At the end of the performance we will learn bows. Because it's a late night, I will keep notes to a minimum.

Then, tomorrow, we'll come back and put on a show for the paying customers!

Every single person in the cast is doing a great, great job. Just keep stepping up your game for another couple of nights, and you will finally arrive at the moment we've been working toward for so many weeks. Get rest, review your lines and music, and spread the word!!

Fasten Your Seat Belts

Rehearsal tonight will involve running the whole show beginning to end, while adding the orchestra, the stage crew, and maybe setting some light cues. It will be long, so come prepared for a long and somewhat grueling evening.

Monday of tech week can be painful and taxing, but it's also exciting. And just think-- three more rehearsals until dress! It's time to put the whipped cream and cherry on top of the sundae of awesome that we've been constructing. Come rested, ready and patient--6:30 tonight!

Saturday Orchestra Cancelled

Turns out not enough players could make it. So if you were planning on going and you haven't left the house yet and checking this blog is the last thing you do before going out the door, then, well, don't!

The Final Push!

Today: Ben will be at the theater to work on the set starting at 9. Feel free to stop by and add your talents to the process.

Tomorrow: Orchestra rehearsal at 10. Set work starts at ten as well.

All weekend: Enjoy the Easter holiday stuff, but review your lines and music EVERY SINGLE DAY, MANY TIMES!!

We are ready to take this show up the last notch that will turn it into a great piece of entertainment for the whole community. Tell friends, family, neighbors, stragers on the street-- they don't want to miss this!!

It Is a Hard Knock Life

Much more accomplished today in our heavy-duty three hour rehearsal today. I am happy to see so much coming together, but there is still plenty to do to get this to the level of awesome that I know we can achieve.

This week we will hit Act I Monday and Wednesday, Act II Tuesday and Thursday. We will also settle the rest of the movement for "I Don't Need Anything..." Rehearsal length will be based on what we need to get done, so be prepared to stay past the 8:30ish time frame we've been observing. I will try to get the orphans out a bit earlier this week so that they are well rested for show week. Keep in mind that Wednesday is press night, and some folks are due at the theater, in costume, at 6 (for TV!!).

I haven't said this explicitly because so many people are already there, but as of Monday everyone should be off book (as in No Script in Your Hand On Stage At All Ever). Study study study!

If we get in a real bind, there is the possibility of a rehearsal next Saturday to pull that together. We'll see what happens as we progress. Easter weekend will also be our time to help finish the set and anything the tech, costume and prop crews can use.

Keep working and preparing and rehearsing and reviewing. Opening is just 13 days away!!

More Patches and Fixes

After careful consideration, I have decided NOT to set all songs in the show to the tune of "Hard Knock Life."

Tomorrow (Thursday) we'll start with orphans at 6:30. Big boys and girls should show up at 7:15 when we will address adding the chorus to "Anything But You," working and adding people to "Going To Like It Here," the cabinet meeting, and seeing if we can't make "NYC" look a little less like a convention of tipsy moths. And perhaps also that traffic jam in the radio station for "Never Fully Dressed."

Saturday morning at 10 AM is still for running all musical numbers, with words and music and moving around and all that good stuff.

And don't forget-- it's so much easier to move and dance and act without that book in your hands!!

I am excited and pleased that every single rehearsal carries us forward toward the goal of a super show. Keep plugging, cast!!

What's Next??

Two good nights of rehearsals in which we've started to see how this show is going to fit together. Many fine performances are already starting to take shape, and the battle between Brett Sloan and Bill Hennessy to appear in the largest number of roles on stage is heating up. Meanwhile, Sloan has taken the lead in the Funny Voices Competition.

Wednesday and Thursday will be devoted to all the various odds and ends that have demanded extra attention, and Saturday morning is still planned for running musical numbers. Both of those goals will be aided by the appearance of a pianist.

Thanks to everyone for the hard work and patience during this Cast Reunion Week. Keep studying your stuff, practicing your bits, and preparing. Opening night is not all that far away.

Upcoming Adventures

Between tonight and Saturday morning we should finish most of the rough blocking of the show. We've spent a couple of weeks of creating many bits and pieces.

Next week we'll use Monday and Tuesday to string all our little bits and pieces together. Wednesday and Thursday are reserved for fixing whatever looks rocky on Monday and Tuesday, and Saturday morning we will work the musical numbers.

It will be like a big old reunion week for the cast, but it will mean that most of you will have to change gears from rehearsing every so often to most nights. The up side is that you are in a cast of really cool people and you will enjoy your evenings together.

Post Audition Thoughts

We finished up auditioning and casting a bit after 8:30 last night.

We saw forty-one orphans, a bit fewer than twenty grown women, and five men.

This was probably the toughest casting session I've ever done. In some areas, we had an excess of riches. In other areas, we may yet do some begging. My thanks to everyone who came out and auditioned. I appreciate so much the nerve that it takes to stand up and sing and speak -- by simply participating, you raised yourself a step above all those people who imagine they might come out for a show "someday" but have never quite found the nerve. I cannot thank the auditioners enough for their heart and nerve in trying out this weekend.

Phone calls will be made soon. For those of you we're asking to join the cast, congratulations. For those who will not be with us, we hope you will be back again for the next show.

A Few Last Audition Thoughts

Just a reminder, particularly to the girls aspiring to the show--

An audition for a show is not a straight-up talent competition. You may be the loudest belter, but if the directors are looking for non-belting, you may be passed over. You may be the best actor in the room, but if you're three feet too tall for the role, it won't matter. And some days it comes down to how well you work/look with the other performers.

All you can do is show us the best of what you've got. What we have to do is figure out how that will fit in our picture of the show.

I'm hoping for Annies and orphans who are natural and believable. I'm more interested in real than in big. And I'm hoping for many men, or at least many more men than we sometimes get, because there are many manly roles to fill.

Now let's go have two days of fun!

Here's the audition packet!

(There's a little residual chunk of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in it, I think. Just ignore that)

Annie and Orphan Auditioners

All folks auditioning for Annei or an orphan role should prepare the following piece of "Tomorrow"

I would also like you prepare the following bit of dialogue. This is Annie talking to Sandy right after rescuing him and before bursting into the above song

"Oh, poor boy. Did they hurt you? They're after you, ain't they? Well, they're after me, too. But don't worry, I ain't gonna let them get you or me. I'll take care of you. And everything's gonna be fine. For both of us. If not today, well..."

Sunday, February 13, 2011

AUDITIONS

Auditions for ANNIE will be on March 5 & 6 (Saturday and Sunday).

Auditions for orphans and Annies will be at 1:00. All orphans will sing a portion of "Tomorrow" and should prepare a short chunk of dialogue that I'll be posting here in the next day or two.

Auditions for all other roles will be at 3:00. Auditioners should prepare 32 bars of an audition piece (unless auditioning for a non-singing role) and be prepared to read.

Characters

Annie- 11 years old. She'll get an entry of her own later.

ORPHANS:
Molly- 6 years old. The littlest one
Kate- 7 years old.
Tessie- 10 years old. The whiny one {"Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!")
Pepper- 12 years old . The tough one.
July- 13 years old. The quiet one.
Duffy- 13 years old. The biggest one.

Miss Hannigan- Boozy, abusive old broad. Both villain and comic relief. 2 numbers plus reprises.

Oliver Warbucks- Rich, feisty, Republican-- and bald. Hard-edged with a heart of gold. 7 numbers.

Grace Farrell- Warbucks' right hand woman and Annie's champion. Tough, lively, efficient, and big-hearted. 5 numbers.

Rooster- Miss Hannigan's ne'er-do-well brother. A con man, slick, smooth and without a speck of kindness in him,

Lily- Rooster's dimwitted and brassy girlfriend. As morally bankrupt as Rooster, but without his cunning or smarts.

Bert Healy- Slick Guy-smiley-ish radio host who could have been a used car salesman. I scene, 1 song.

Boylan Sisters- trio of radio singers. I scene, 1 song.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt- President in a wheelchair. 1 song.

Drake: Warbucks's top servant

Mrs. Greer: head housekeeper

Chorus- This is a big utility chorus. They play poor homeless folks, Warbucks's servants, and the people of New York City.

Additionally, there are a variety of character roles, several of which are non-singing, which could come from the chorus or be cast separately, most of which appear in only one scene:

Mr. Bundles: the laundryman at the orphanage
Dog catcher and assistant: Boo! Hiss! Big meanies!
Officer Ward: a cop from the orphanage neighborhood
Sound effects man at the radio station
Fred and Wacky: ventriliquist and his dummy
Jimmy Johnson: another radio personality
FDR's cabinet: at least five bureaucrats of substance. they do sing
Brandeis: a big league judge

And we're live...

With just about a month until auditions, we're up and running here to start preparations for the FCOA production of ANNIE. I am extremely pleased to announce that Jodi Hoover has agreed to handle the musical reins for this production. Jenn Fox is producing, and there is more fun to come. In the days ahead I'll start posting character lists and descriptions as well as pre-audition information.

Everyone remembers that Annie provides some great opportunities for young girls, but it's easy to forget that this is a large cast show with a wide variety of parts for performers of all ages. The parts also cover a range from people who like to become fully immersed in a show to people who only have the time for a brief appearance.

At any rate, add this to your bookmarks and watch this space for information about the upcoming production. I'm looking forward to adding another show to the list of FCOA hits, and I hope you'll join us along the way!
